Stony Brook CRUSHES Army

STONY BROOK - 23
ARMY - 3

Stony Brook, 22 point computer underdogs, crush Army, Saturday at Michie Stadium in West Point.

Stony Brook senior running back Miguel Maysonet rushed for 220 yards and two TDs in the 23-3 victory versus Army on Saturday.

Miguel Maysonet rushed for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns, and Stony Brook dominated Army 23-3 on Saturday to notch its first victory against an FBS opponent. Kyle Essington finished 11-for-15 passing for 151 yards for the Seawolves (4-1) and Kevin Norrell added 95 receiving yards in the wire-to-wire win. In the teams’ first meeting, Stony Brook held Army to a three-and-out on the game’s first series and marched 74 yards on four plays, including a 49-yard touchdown rush by Maysonet. The Seawolves recovered all four Army fumbles and converted 11-of-17 third downs. The Black Knights (0-4), who entered the game as the nation’s leading rushing team, were held to 273 yards on the ground in losing their eighth consecutive match dating back to last season. A hobbled Trent Steelman started and set Army’s all-time rushing record for quarterbacks with his team-high 89 yards.

Cal Poly Beats Wyoming

CAL POLY - 24
WYOMING - 22

The Cal Poly Mustangs (2-0), computer underdogs by over 27 points, upset the Wyoming Cowboys (0-3) Saturday, ending Wyoming's perfect 9-0 record against FCS teams. The Cowboys were without their starting quarterback, Brett Smith, who was injured against Toledo last week with a head injury, as Colby Kirkegaard went 15 for 23 with 122 yards on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming. It turned out the Cowboys missed Smith's 256 total offense average during the game, as the Cowboys employed a more conservative approach, limiting long passes and relying more on the running game for Kirkegaard.  Wyoming joins UNLV and Colorado St. as the third MWC team to lose to a FCS opponent this year. Cal Poly's Deonte Williams finished the game with 187 rushing yards on 19 carries, a career-high record in a Mustang uniform. Ken Jackson led Cal Poly's defense with 10 tackles, including one for loss. Mike Purcell had a game-high 16 tackles for Wyoming. Cal Poly was 9 of 20 on third-down conversions; Wyoming was 2 of 12.Cal Poly is 4-12 versus Division 1 opponents over the last 10 years with 3 wins in the last 7 years. Coach Tim Walsh's Mustangs won at UTEP in 2003 and beat San Diego State in 2006 and 2008. The last time Wyoming started 0-3 was in 2002.

Cal Poly jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on 65-yard and 9-yard touchdown runs. Deonte Williams score the former just 1:09 into the game on the 4th play while Kristaan Ivory scored the later a few minutes later. Wyoming's Shaun Wick punched in the first touchdown with 6:55 left in the half and the second six minutes later, giving his team a 15-14 lead at halftime. Both were one-yard runs and the former was completed with a successful touchdown run. Ivory put the ball into the end zone for Cal Poly late in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run, gaining a 21-14 lead. That lead was extended to 24-15 with Bobby Zalud's 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Wyoming did attempt a comeback in the final minutes of the game. Wick scored his third touchdown of the game with 7:34 left in the game, but they came no closer than 24-22. Wyoming quarterback Colby Kirkegaard threw an interception on the first play of what was the team's final possession.

Week 2 Upsets

There were some huge week 2 FCS upsets. Each division 1 school is listed second.

Sacramento St. 30
Colorado 28

North Dakota St. 22
Colorado St. 7

Illinois St. 31
Eastern Michigan 14

Northern Arizona 17
UNLV 14

UNLV - NORTHERN ARIZONA
UNLV, who were supposed to win by 14 according to computers, and led 14-0 by halftime, blew the lead and were stunned by division 1-aa Northern Arizona 17-14 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas Saturday. UNLV will try to get revenge against Northern Arizona on November 12th at 7pm at the Thomas & Mack Center in Men's Basketball.

Last year UNLV lost the second game of the season to another D-1aa opponent, Southern Utah, 41-16. Head coach Bobby Hauck called that the "all-time bad" loss at the time. He has since stupidly backtracked on that opinion. "On Saturday, a year later, he justified that one by saying Southern Utah’s upperclassmen were better than UNLV’s," which is laughable.

A stunned Bobby Hauck looks on during the 4th quarter.

EASTERN MICHIGAN - ILLINOIS ST.
In one of the bigger upsets this Saturday, statistically speaking, Eastern Michigan, over 30 point computer favorites, lost to D-1aa Illinois St., 31-14 at Eastern Michigan. For the Illinois St. Redbirds, Darrelynn Dunn had 130 yards rushing on 32 carries. He also scored two touchdowns.

EMU senior quarterback Alex Gillett was 11-of-25 passing for 145 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also led the team in rushing with 49 yards and a touchdown. Gillett spent most of the day scrambling and trying to avoid the Redbirds pass rush. The Eagles only got 11 first downs on the day. The Eagles had five turnovers on the day to go along with nine penalties for 69 yards and a blocked field goal.

After down 14-10 after the 1st half, the Redbirds (2-0) scored on their first two drives of the 2nd half to push the lead to 24-14. As the EMU offense struggled, the Redbirds controlled the clock, holding on to the ball for nearly 22 minutes in the second half. The Redbirds then added another touchdown as they held Eastern Michigan scoreless for the rest of the 2nd half.

EMU's Bronson Hill bobbles the ball before catching it.

Box Score

The state of Colorado did not have a good week 2, as Colorado and Colorado St. both lost to FCS teams. Colorado will join Pittsburgh as another FBS team from an automatic qualifying conference to lose to a FCS team, losing to Sacramento St. Both team may have set a record for most teams in 1 state to lose to FCS teams on the same day. The Colorado Buffaloes were almost 15 point computer favorites and the Colorado St. Rams were over 21 point favorites.

COLORADO ST. - NORTH DAKOTA ST.
The Colorado St. Rams lost their home opener to the North Dakota St. Bison 22-7 on Saturday night before a crowd of 23,567 at Hughes Stadium. The game opened with the Rams' third play from scrimmage that was a 69-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Grayson to tight end Crockett Gillmore. After that, however, CSU's offense crossed midfield just twice, and those drives ended with, a blocked 51-yard field goal attempt and an interception. The Bison answered CSU's first drive with a four-play touchdown drive of their own. North Dakota State defensive end Cole Jirik tackled CSU running back Tommey Morris for a safety to give the Bison a 9-7 lead with 5:34 left in the first quarter to put NDSU ahead for good. The Bison got the ball right back on a free kick and drove 67 yards for their second touchdown and took a 19-7 lead into the locker room at the break. Nothing changed in the second half as NDSU ran out the entire third quarter on a 16-play, 71-yard drive that resulted in a field goal that made it a 15-point lead. Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson was off all night, completing just 13 of 24 passes for 171 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Colorado State was just 1-for-10 on third-down conversions; North Dakota State was 12-for-21.

The Bison were guaranteed $250,000 plus the money from 500 tickets sold. Estimates had nearly 3,000 Bison fans peppered throughout the stadium in yellow shirts that read, in part: Colorado Bound.
Colorado St. tight end Crockett Gilmore outruns North Dakota St. defender Brendin Pierre in the first quarter for the Rams' only touchdown on the day.
Brock Jensen and the NDSU Bison run against the Colorado State Rams Saturday.

COLORADO - SACRAMENTO ST.

The Colorado Buffaloes lost to their second career FCS opponent Saturday, losing to the Sacramento St. Hornets 30-28 on a last second 30-yard field goal as time expired. The Buffaloes record is 1-2 against FCS competition in their long and lackluster history, losing last to Montana St. at home in 2006. Castaneda joined the Hornets after helping City College of San Francisco win the junior college national championship last season, but he was paying his own way until Saturday, when his first game-winner at any level earned him not only a hug from coach Marshall Sperbeck, but also an education. Trailing 28-27, the Hornets got the ball at their own 15 with 2:26 left and marched downfield for the game-winner by Castaneda, after which wide receiver Austin Dotson did a series of backflips as his teammates swarmed the field. Morris Norrise caught seven passes for 104 yards for Sacramento State and Chris Broadnax had five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Hornets' coach Marshall Sperbeck announced walk-on kicker Edgar Castaneda will receive a scholarship to pay for his school as a result of his late-game heroics. The Hornets (1-1), who had to come back from a 14-0 deficit, also left Boulder with a $460,000 paycheck following a stunning victory at a Pac-12 stadium for the second straight season. They upset Oregon State 29-28 in overtime in last year's opener.
Sacramento State running back A.J. Ellis, front, stretches to score a touchdown as Colorado defensive back Parker Orms, center, and defensive lineman Justin Solis look on in the first quarter.
Colorado fullback Christian Powell celebrates as he scores a touchdown on a run past Sacramento State defensive back Robert Beale in the first quarter.

Phil Steele sees more possible FCS upsets

"3. We could see more FCS over FBS upsets
Last week, four lower-division FCS schools pulled shocking upsets over FBS teams, and this week could feature several more surprise wins for FCS programs. Since 2007, Minnesota has lost three games to FCS competition, while its opponent New Hampshire has upset four FBS schools since 2004. Stephen F. Austin is one of the most improved teams in the FCS and catches SMU on a short week following a big loss to Baylor.
Eastern Washington upset Idaho last week and could pull another this week against Washington State. Remember, in last year's opener the Eagles nearly beat Washington (lost 30-27). North Dakota State, the defending FCS champion, has won five games against FBS teams since 2006, and this week the team catches Colorado State coming off a rivalry win over Colorado.
UNLV lost to Southern Utah 41-16 last year and must regroup after a three-overtime loss to Minnesota last week in order to take on a dangerous Northern Arizona team. Lastly, Illinois State's tough defense, which allowed just 86 yards rushing per game last year, matches up well with Eastern Michigan's ground attack."

"FCS more like FC-yes"

Published September 02, 2012
Sports Network

The "identity crisis" in the Football Championship Subdivision might be overstated. After Week 1 of the new season, plenty of people across the nation know just who plays under the old Division I-AA umbrella, even if the FCS moniker gets renamed in the future. Four FCS teams opening their season with an upset of FBS competition is an eye-catching total. Maybe they can call the FCS the FC-yes.
McNeese State beat Middle Tennessee, 27-21, and Eastern Washington handled Idaho, 20-3, on Thursday night, and Youngstown State defeated Pittsburgh, 31-17, and UT Martin slipped past Memphis, 20-17, on Saturday.
None of the four teams was picked to win its conference title, but each can be a factor if it can sustain the early high level of play. That hasn't been easy, however, for many of the teams that upset FBS competition in recent seasons.
Youngstown State's win was particularly rewarding because it showed the Penguins can put the results behind the high expectations surrounding their team.
Eastern Washington, the 2010 FCS national champion, appears back on track after a disappointing, injury-plagued season a year ago, and new gunslinger Kyle Padron has his share of wide receiver talent.
McNeese State didn't get Tyrann Mathieu from LSU, but it has its own dynamic defensive back in safety Malcolm Bronson.
UT Martin's offense can be scary good at times, and with a new defensive coordinator, the Skyhawks hope to match up on that side of the ball.
All four teams went 6-5 or 5-6 last season, but returned an influential amount of starters, so better seasons clearly are in the works.
The way the four come back to action next Saturday is quite a contrast. Eastern Washington (Washington State) and UT Martin (Northern Illinois) take on more FBS competition, while McNeese State hosts a Division III school (McMurry) and Youngstown plays a non-scholarship school (Valparaiso) that has lost 33 of its last 35 games."

UPSETS UPSETS UPSETS

WOW. WHAT A DAY! College football is finally here and in full swing as evidenced by the plethora of upsets today. The dogs won today...Ohio, Colorado st, and Nevada were the big d1 winners today. Today was a very special day. One that I have never seen before. Now...to get to the FCS side of things. You can categorize the outcomes into 3 areas for FCS teams today.  First, the usual, most FCS teams were routed... Air Force took care of Idaho St, 9-21, East Carolina pulled away from App St, 35-13, Kansas St beat Missouri St 51-9, Texas Tech beat NW St 44-6, Miss st beat Jackson st 56-9, LA Lafayette shut out Lamar 40-0, Missouri got some 2nd team reps against SE Louisiana at a score of 62-10, Ole Miss beat Cent Arkansas 49-27, and several other FCS teams lost.

The second thing that happened today, was that several FCS teams hung around in games while clearly over matched  Arkansas won 49-24 to Jacksonville st, Liberty lost a close one to Wake Forest 20-17, Indiana st lost to in state rival Indiana 24-17 (OK maybe not that over matched), William & Mary lost a heart breaker in the end 7-6 to Maryland, and Northern Iowa, famous for their sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA tourney a couple years ago, lost to Wisconsin 26-21.  I was surprised at the close scores, especially in the Wisconsin, Maryland, and Arkansas games.

Thirdly...THE UPSETS! There were 3 big FCS-related upsets today.

Memphis, new tenants of the Big East starting next year, lost a game to lowly Tenn-Martin 20-17 in the final seconds at home. UT Martin was a 5-6 team last year and it seems maybe the Big East should reconsider and invite UT Martin instead. It is unknown how much Memphis paid to lose their opener today. New Memphis Tigers' coach Justin Fuente lost his first game and joins the other 2 coaches on this list on all losing their first games with their new teams.

Texas State, 34.5 to 37 point underdogs, playing their first FBS game ever, defeated Houston, a team that went 13-1, defeated Penn st 30-14 in the Ticketcity bowl, and ended the year ranked 14th/18th in the coaches/ap polls. Although technically not a FCS team anymore, Texas St's win is still very noteworthy as they were as green as possible in division 1a. The game wasn't even close! Final score? 30-13. There are few teams that I have found that won with a greater point spread. Here's a good slideshow on upsets. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/683169-college-football-the-50-greatest-upsets-in-college-football-history/page/51

fcs vs fbs: http://www.maizenbrew.com/2012/8/29/3277686/fcs-vs-fbs-a-recent-history-with-projections

The cougars couldn't convert on third down in the 2nd half and Texas St got behind Marcus Curry and rode him for 2 TDs and 131 yards on 14 carries.

And Pittsburgh, which by some computer estimates, should've won by 30 points, LOST to Youngstown St, 31-17 at home. Not even close. And with that, the Paul Chryst era gets off on a rocky start. Pittsburgh had the talent, but once again, couldn't put a win together and is probably the most embarrassing loss this weekend. Street, Sunseri, and Graham have a lot to work on this year. Youngstown State has a lot to be hopeful for this year and in the future as they look to put their 5 loss season behind them. This is clearly one way of doing that. This win marks Youngstown state's first victory over a BCS foe, their 20th victory of a FBS team and their first since 2000, which was against Kent State. Kurt Hess added 176 yards through the year and Andre Stubbs add 176 all-purpose yards and 2 scores. Pitt Loses ROTFL
'
Andre Stubbs has a 13 yard run that's good for 6.

Note: All 3 upsets here were at the favorites' home stadium. And with the 2 FCS upsets before today and the 2 tonight (Texas State is technically now D1), We are already at 4 FCS wins over FBS teams. That happened 6 times for the entire 2011 season.

Eastern Washington Grabs 2nd FCS over D1 Victory of 2012

An hour and 40 minutes later....A team that went 6-5 last year, the Eastern Washington Eagles, infamous for blatantly copying off of Boise St's school-colored turf, defeated the paltry Idaho Vandals. Idaho learns a valuable lesson, not even having a plane decorated after you (after throwing a mini-temper tantrum to get it), will make your terrible program invincible to FCS opponents. 20-3 was the score in Moscow, Idaho, and a nice dominating road win for Eastern Washington. This just has to be totally embarassing for Idaho on the other hand. These kind of losses just leave a black eye, but maybe when you're program is on life support, another black eye makes no difference. You've got to feel sorry for the 11,136 people at the Kibbie Dome that had to watch their home team get taken to school by a FCS school. Not a good way to start the year. Idaho was 2-10 last year as this year looks to be the same... maybe worse.

Eastern Washington's Nicholas Edwards prepares to catch a pass over Idaho's Trey Williams.

The first D1 loss of 2012...

Congratulations to the Middle Tennessee and McNeese St! Middle Tennessee has the prestigious honor of becoming the first FBS team to lose to a FCS team in 2012! CONGRATULATIONS! Despite 15 points in the 4th quarter, Cody Stroud led the Cowboys to victory, 27-21 ON THE ROAD. McNeese st was a alright 6-5 last year. Perhaps they'll do better this year. Looks like McNeese St doesn't need the honeybadger after all to beat D1 schools...Great win boys. Maybe Middle Tennessee will schedule a poorer opponent, Nicholls State perhaps?
